Robert O.
Jones, Jr.
Nov 28, 1945 — Jul 7, 2021
Robert Oliver Jones, Jr. quietly passed away with family present the morning of July 7, 2021, at the age of 75. Born on November 28, 1945 in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Haddon Township, NJ. He is the beloved husband of the late Phyllis Regina Jones (née Crognale), devoted and loving father of Christina M. O'Leary Everett and Robert L. Jones, loving grandfather of Catie, Brady and Courtney, dear brother of Miriam Mlynarski, Pauline Beam Taylor, the late Barbara Dobinson and the late Elizabeth McLeod. Robert is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Beyond being a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and an honorable veteran of the Vietnam War, he is widely acknowledged by his family as being a rock-solidly reliable provider and caretaker in addition to being loyal, generous and forgiving human being.
Robert was a hard worker. He worked his way up from blue prints to Autocad as a design engineer. He rarely passed up the opportunity for overtime at the office, getting up at 4am to be in the office at 6am. He finally retired at the age of 72. During those years, he worked at various companies like United, Stone and Webster, Raytheon and the Washington Group on building structures such as nuclear power plants.
One thing about Robert, he was always home for dinner and worked on the house every night. Robert wasn't much into hobbies, unless you consider home improvement a hobby. In hindsight, his passion project was his home. He took great pride in applying his engineering design talent and his "sweat equity" into building an in-ground pool, an enclosed porch extension, Victorian-inspired custom wall and ceiling wainscoting, a remodeled and color-coordinated kitchen / dining room / living room trio, backyard retreat, etc. You name it; he designed and built it.
For a while in the 1980s, when Robert was stationed in Texas for work, he developed an interest in photography, and he was good at it. The most frequent target of his Nikon SLR camera was his daughter, of whom he took photos during the pageantry and regal of baton twirling competitions. He himself competed in a photography competition at work for which he won a prize.
Robert also wasn't much into travel, but he did enjoy frequenting the Jersey Shore. This teenage pastime extended into him time as a husband and father. His shore points of choice were predictably Wildwood, NJ and Cape May, NJ. If Robert had any regrets, it was that he hadn't traveled more. One exception his trips to Florida, most recently Key West, FL. You could say that Robert was a closet "parrot head" who learned to appreciate late in life the simple pleasure of listening to music across a body of water. Then again, this should be no surprise since the deck extension to his home in his adopted hometown of Sewell, NJ (Washington Twp) overlooked that in-ground pool he built and had 2 external Bose speakers mounted to its supporting beams.
Robert's last milestone act as a father was to escort his daughter a second time down the aisle. He performed this act dutifully and with his usual quiet class. It is in this capacity by which his 2 surviving children choose to remember and honor him.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing, Friday July 9, 2021, from 8 to 10 AM at TERRANOVA FUNERAL HOME, 402 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 AM at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, St. John Church, 809 Park Avenue, Collingswood.
