Obituary

Katie (Aikaterini) Mytilineou went to be with God on March 20, 2023, after a month long battle with Covid-19. She was a healthy and strong woman who lived to be 95, in West Deptford, Voorhees, Cherry Hill and Camden, New Jersey. Born and raised in Athens, Greece on January 17, 1928 (or the 18th, we'll never really know!) to Georgos and Alexandra (Tsilvalis) Mytilineos of Athens, Attica, Greece. She is predeceased by her older brother Nikos Mytilineos and younger sister Kiki (Angeliki) Mytilineous Penas (Costa Penas) and her nephew George Guttknecht.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sandra (Alexandra) Oyler and Belinda Anna Dent (Brian), her grandchildren Michael John Joyce and Aimee Katherine (Roesch) Schmitt (Andrew Schmitt) and her great grandchildren Jurgen, Gabriel, Amalia and Oliver Schmitt, and her niece Deborah Guttknecht, Angelica Mytilineos Clifton, Sophia DeSouza, Sandra Feucht and nephew George Mytilineos.

Born and raised in Greece, she left school as a teenager to tend to the wounded during the Greek/German war in 1941.  She then became a secretary for a shipping company.  She won second place in a beauty pageant and became a successful runway model which gave her great fashion sense and style.  Then, at age 26 she was introduced to a Greek-American in the US Military and after dating John (Yannis) Dent in Greece she traveled to Paris, France with him where he was stationed and they were married prior to traveling to the US.  When they arrived they had a beautiful Greek wedding ceremony and started a family in Camden, having two beautiful daughters.  Although they had tough times, they remained friends as the years went on.  Her experience as a model brought her to work in the world of clothing in stores such as Kotlikoff's in Camden, Strawbridges, Bambergers and Lane Bryant in Cherry Hill.  Of course, she worked for a few Greek diners in the area, too including the Diamond Diner, Ponzios and the Country Club Diner.  She also worked for Infotron Electronics on an assembly line and was a very hard worker.

If you knew Katie, you knew she loved being in the sun and the ocean.  Whether it was on the beach, by the pool or on the front stoop, she was always basking in the sun.  She enjoyed singing in the church choir for 30 years at St. Thomas, working in the bakery at the Greek Agora and modeling for Georgia's Furs in the fashion shows at the Bid-n-Buys to help raise money for the church, over the years.  She enjoyed traveling with friends from church, listening to and dancing to Greek music, cooking and baking for her family and had fun spending time and playing with her four wonderful great-grandchildren of whom she was so proud and who loved their Yiayia very much and were the reason she was with us for so long.  In spite of her difficult years as a teenager, when the Germans invaded Greece, she led a very fulfilling life here in the US and visited her homeland often. She was a very kind, loving, strong-willed, beautiful and graceful woman, who was very proud of her Greek heritage and Orthodox religion.  She was the patriarch of the family, we were blessed to have her with us for so long, and she will be greatly missed.
