Obituary

Died on November 19, 2016 at Cooper River West, Pennsauken, NJ. Age 95. Born in Watsonville, CA.

Devoted son of the late Tomegoro and Misaye Tsumoto Fujiki, Beloved husband of the late Kimiko Hiwano. Cherished father of Sandra (late Casey) Bazar Kolongowski of Southampton, NJ. Loving grandfather of Kevin (Julie) Bazar of Collegeville, PA and great-grandfather of Wesley and Brooke Bazar. Proud brother of the late Congressional Gold Medal of Honor recipient Shigeru Thomas Fujiki (late Dorothy) of GA, the late Charlie Satoru Fujiki of Florence, Italy, and the late Akira Fujiki, Haruo (Hardy) Fujiki and Satsuki June Fujiki Mercado, all of Bridgeton, NJ. Survived by many loved nieces and nephews.

Jack's parents were fruit and vegetable farmers in the fertile Santa Cruz County. With three brothers serving the country, and the farm labor shortage in the 1940s, Jack finished high school and remained on the farm to support his family. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and under the Executive Order 9066, all persons of Japanese ancestry, enemy aliens and non-aliens (US citizens) living in the restricted military zone were ordered to be incarcerated. The entire Fujiki family was incarcerated first at the Salinas (CA) Assembly Center and later in Poston, AZ and Heart Mountain, WY. Jack served as a police captain for his camp. When the war ended, Jack and his family moved to the Seabrook, NJ area, as did many Japanese Americans in 1942. He obtained a job at Farm Journal magazine in Philadelphia. He retired after 43 years there. While there, he instituted an Employees Society. He became a part of the community, playing basketball in a local Nisei league and also enjoyed bowling. It was in 1947 that he met and married his beloved wife, Kimi. In 1948, his daughter Sandra was born. Jack moved his family to Mt. Ephraim, NJ, where he enjoyed friends for the next 58 years. Jack was a quiet and hard worker, spending five days of week at Farm Journal and working on the weekends at a local Mobil gas station. Jack was always a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and his family was his greatest joy. He also adopted many stray dogs and cats. In 1990, Jack was struck down by the first of multiple strokes. He rehabbed tirelessly to learn to drive again. He became a volunteer at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and helped with their Stroke Club. He encouraged stroke patients to rejoin life and never give up. But his mobility was compromised and he entered Cooper River West in 2006, five months after Kimi passed. Jack was shown compassionate care and love by the many staff members, nurses and aides there. In his final days, he was comforted by a wonderful team from Hospice Compassus.
